Coyote Creek 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, California
This cabernet sauvignon is stellar. Complex, with ample grip, it showcases flavors of plum, black tea, black raspberries, and a touch of chocolate cupcake. Sultry on the mid-palate and finish, showing off smoked cherry skins. This wine benefits when allowed to breathe.
Don't be afraid to pour it into a decanter. (It will be our little secret!)
=>The second night the wine was better! The nose opened up to offer sweet perfume. Dark chocolate tones with nuances of black cherries and red raspberries. A wonderful cabernet and a fine example of an undervalued wine. Excellent!

Yali 2007 Wetland, Maipo Valley, Chile (#164 at WWW)
This spicy little red sees NO OAK! If you get red wine headaches, you might want to consider trying this wine. Many people get headaches, not from sulfites, but from the ground-up oak added to red wines. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and carmenere. We found this little inexpensive red to be very complex for its price. Flavors of black cherries, roasted red peppers, balsamic reduction and white pepper. The tannins give the wine an opposing facet, offering a black tea tone. The wine improves as it is open.

Il Bastardo 2008 Sangiovese, Toscano, Italy (#2 at WWW)
We get a kick out of this label, but consistently, this is a very good bottle of sangiovese vintage after vintage. Aromas of blueberries and white flowers waft from the glass. In the mouth the wine offers tastes of red raspberries, tobacco, cedar, and minerals. A touch of grip marries with a hint of earthiness. It has a healthy dollop of acidity that carries the spicy character forward on the finish.

Gato Negro 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot, Valle Central, Chile
Creamy nose offering aromas of sassarfras root. Its complexity surpasses it price by at least double. Flavors of roasted coffee beans, black cherry, cassis, red bell pepper, black tea tannins, charred spice pods are generous. The finish shows brown sugar, bubble gum, more sassafras, and a touch of lavender. Incredible value for the quality offered.
=>The second night the wine was plump, rich, and ripe as an encore. This is another red you could pour into a decanter and serve it as a special wine from your cellar for guests. It will be our little secret. The Stelvin closure (screw cap) is a bonus, since they are sans TCA mold, which can rob a wine of its lovely character.

Rock Brook 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, California
Baked cherry pie aromas are an indication of tastes to come. This wine is remarkable and its character held up for several nights, making it an even better value. Flavors of black tea, distinct black cherry, and vanilla. The wine is smooth, with a silky texture. A ripe pomegranate tone shows on the mid-palate. Dark chocolate flavors weave their way through the experience. Highly enjoyable for several nights. An excellent value.

      Crane Lake 2008 Sangiovese, California
This wine WOWs. Sangiovese, the wine grape of Chianti, rarely likes growing outside of Italy. Sure you can find examples of it in the United States, but they are not common. This sangiovese reminds me of that inexpensive Chianti offering a lot of bang for the buck. However, you never see a Chianti of this quality at this price. Soft, sweet scents of white chocolate and flowers on the nose. In the mouth the wine is bright, savory, and ripe. Flavors of roses, lavender, strawberries, milk chocolate, and red raspberries fill the palate. The wine has a mouthwatering dose of acidity that marries well with the slightly flinty tone on the finish. This wine would pair well with many lighter foods. Chicken and salmon come to mind. It would make any Italian fare sing.
=>The second night the wine was equally as good, if not better. Milk chocolate marries with nuances of balsamic reduction and blueberries. This wine drank well for several nights without Vac-u-Vin or gas. Finally, after it being sampled over and over, at one week it started to show a little decline. Bravo!

Where the Crane Lake Sangiovese is bright and lively, the Crane Lake Petite Sirah offers a bit of sultry broodiness.

Crane Lake 2008 Petite Sirah, California
Distinct elderberry aromas escape from the glass. There is also a touch of baked berry pie, with scents of buttery browned crust. On the palate the wine is dense, offering flavors of black raspberries and smokiness, splashed with a rich dark chocolate tone. White pepper tannins add a complementary backdrop to the obvious ripeness.
=>The second night the wine shows more spice. The nose is generous with cookie dough aromas. On the palate the wine has prominent berry flavors, with lavender, balsamic reduction, and a hint of vanilla. This inky little gem is an exceptional wine for the price. Serve it with grilled red meats, a little dark chocolate, or red sauce.

Where the Crane Lake Petite Sirah is sultry and extracted, the Crane Lake Sangiovese offers a bright and savory complexity.

      Barefoot NV Zinfandel, California
The wine needs to breathe and is remarkably good the second and third night. A dense veneer of blueberry, red raspberry, and pomegranate, slowly unravel into a spicy mid-palate of vanilla, tar, roasted red pepper, and white chocolate. A touch of baby powder dances delicately on the finish.
Second night=> the wine shows nuances of chocolate covered cherries and black tea tannins. This is a great value for the money with its rich, smooth, ripe profile.

      Pepperwood Grove 2008 Syrah, California
One of the best values in the Colorado market. The nose is sweet, with aromas of tobacco, roses, berries and cookie dough. It is extracted, smooth, and oh so juicy. Offering flavors of blueberry, raspberry, dark chocolate, licorice, vanilla, and balsamic, the wine evolves and improves for several days. A contender for your personal house wine list.
