A blend of 80% tempranillo and 20% cabernet sauvignon. Smooth and smoky, with flavors of raspberry, spice, dark chocolate, and vanilla bean. Care 2006 Tinto, Carinena, Spain
This red blend is one third syrah, one third tempranillo, and one third garnacha. Deep scarlet color goes hand and hand with a big berry nose. The palate is filled with flavors of pencil lead, black cherry skins, smoke, black berries, clove, and blueberries. An intense and extracted wine, the finish hints at a little white truffle-terroir. This wine sees no oak.

Castano 2006 Monastrell, Yecla, Spain
Extracted and concentrated this Spanish mourvedre offers flavors of plum, cream, black cherry skins, red raspberries brambles, licorice, black tea, and raspberry liqueur. Roasted cherries and smokiness fill in the finish. Lots of grip to back up the intense fruit flavors. An inexpensive wine that begs for a decanter.

Cruz de Piedra 2006 Garnacha Joven, Calatayud, Spain
This garnacha saw no oak. It is an example of for perfect fruit. A canvas of red raspberries is splashed with spice, sun dried tomatoes, hint of mocha, and black pepper. Rich and dense, yet it is a lively drink with pomegranate acidity. Wispery soft tannins with a medium body.

  El arte de Viven 2004 Ribera del Duero, Spain
This is an example why Ribera del Duero is gaining a great reputation in the wine industry. Impressive old tempranillo vines date back sixty to eighty years. Distinct scents of ripe cherries waft from the glass. This layered gem shows a spicy side immediately, with tones of sandalwood, lavender, vanilla, and a hint of balsamic reduction. Black cherry flavors prevail from nose to finish. Its complexity is not overwhelmed by its lip smacking grip. An in-the-know wine, at least until everybody else discovers it.

A blend of 77% tempranillo and 23% cabernet sauvignon. Rich and spicy, this blend has depth and elegance. Chocolate, black cherry, and cassis tones are graced by sweet oak vanilla flavors. Good grip offers a backbone to the fruit flavors, while a hint of tobacco and spice linger on the finish. Old world styled with that new world Spanish touch.

El Trofeo 2006 Red, Vino de la Tierra Castilla, Spain
A skillful blend of tempranillo, cabernet, and syrah fermented in stainless steel. El Trofeo means "the trophy." Although a trophy wine demands a great price for its well known stature, this Spanish gem is the perfect prize for those who excel. Blueberry, raspberry liqueur, and mulberry tones create a backdrop, while hints of tobacco, anise, dark chocolate, and sassafras show distinct layers on the mid-palate. The tannins offer grip with nuances of white pepper. A surprising value for the money. This wine gets better as it is open, pour a glass and give it an hour; generous flavors the next day.

It offers an elegant, captivating mouthfeel. The mid-palate blooms with melon and white flowers. Beeming with flavors, the finish leaves an impression of cantaloupe and honey. Probably the best value in Rioja. Remarkable complexity from the first ruby drop to the last. Roasted coffee bean aromas fade into soft rose petal scents. Impressions of spice box, sandalwood and cedar are pressed into a silky fabric of chocolate and red raspberries. The mid-palate fills with flavors of sun dried tomatoes, pomegranate, sassafras, and clove. Its richness fills the mouth, amplifies, and lingers. Cutting acidity peeks through the luxurious mouthfeel. The wine is just as a intense the second day it is open, offering mulberry, myrrh, ground bay leaf and a roasted red pepper finish. Soft talcum tannins with a berry elixir-like finish.

Zumaya 2005 Ribera Del Duero, Spain
Ribera del Duero is a new growing region, offering a hip cross section of Spanish wine. This red is 100% tempranillo. The palate is splashed with nuances of pencil lead, lavender, clove, and milk chocolate. Prominent tannins are balanced with an elegant, slightly mushroom flavor. Fresh picked herbs, licorice, and a sassy note of tar emerge on the mid-palate and finish. It gives wines at twice the price some serious competition.
